Thousands of protesters marched in solidarity with women’s rights as they gathered neat Texas State Capitol on Saturday, voicing their anger against the new abortion law that came into effect from 1st September2021. The primary objective behind this protest march carried is to end the assault on the reproductive rights of women and their freedom. According to a press release, the protestors started protesting at around it 9 am and it went on till the early afternoon.
The protest got support from multiple local leaders including the likes of Andy Brown (Judge of Travis), Sarah Eckhardt (Texas state senator), and Lloyd Doggett (US Representative from Texas). All these prominent personalities supported the cause taken up by the protestors and encouraged the march by voicing their support for women’s rights. It is important to note that many Council members supported the campaign including Paige Ellis who came out and supported the protest march. In fact, it is the support of the Council members that ultimately led to the passing of the resolution which allows Austin city to extends support to all the legal efforts that will try to block the abortion law passed by Texas.
Jehmu Greene, the event emcee also came in the support of the cause and said that they had been fighting this battle for a long and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting women’s rights and liberties. Declaring the abortion laws as the most prominent issue in the state of Texas, the press release of the event said that the new abortion law passed by the state would continue to remain the most critical issue. The new law bans abortion as soon as the heartbeat of the fetus is detected. This is usually the time when a woman is six-week pregnant with many of them won’t know about their pregnancy.
