In a ghastly incident of terrorism, at least 40 people were killed in serial blasts that rocked the Kabul airport in Afghanistan. The incident shook the entire nation and left authorities scrambling for evidence whether these blasts were suicide bombings or not. Despite intelligence reports that the Kabul airport is on the hit list of terrorists and such attacks could happen, the US-led coalition forces failed to stop the carnage.
Taking advantage of the uncertainty and chaos in the country, terrorists belonging to the Islamic State Group carried out the attack at Hamid Karzai Airport in Kabul. As thousands of people flocked to the airport in the hope to fly out of the country, attackers struck the gates of the airport, leaving scores of people dead and injured.
Afghanistan has recently been taken over by the Taliban and many people fear that this will lead to the establishment of hardline rule in the country. The memories of the past when the Taliban ruled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001 are still fresh in the minds of people. Back then, the Taliban adopted a hardline Islamist law and enforced many restrictions on liberty and freedom of expression of people including a ban on girls’ education, curtailing freedom of women, etc.
Confirming the news of the terrorist attack, John Kirby, Pentagon Press Secretary, said that the US government is certain that theses blasts have been carried out by none other than the Islamic State Group. The US has set the 31st August deadline for completing the evacuation process although the country is increasingly under pressure from its allies as well as NGOs and human rights organizations to extend the deadline beyond the end of August month.
